Border Village Nullarbor Plain

Border Village, South Australia – Nullarbor Travel Guide

Fuel, Camping, Quarantine, Eucla and a Classic SA/WA Border Stop

Border Village is one of the most memorable stops on a journey across the Nullarbor.

Located on the Eyre Highway right beside the South Australia–Western Australia border, the small settlement is built around Border Village Roadhouse and the nearby Western Australian quarantine checkpoint. For westbound travellers, Border Village marks the end of the South Australian leg of the crossing. For eastbound travellers, it is one of the first major service stops after leaving Western Australia. Despite its tiny size, Border Village offers an impressive range of traveller facilities including fuel, powered and unpowered camping, motel accommodation, food, a licensed bar, swimming pool, laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi.

Where is Border Village?

Border Village is located in South Australia on the Eyre Highway immediately beside the Western Australian border. The settlement is approximately 12 km east of Eucla and about 5 km inland from the Great Australian Bight coastline. The roadhouse is positioned right beside the border checkpoint, making it almost impossible to miss when crossing between South Australia and Western Australia. Because of its location, Border Village has become one of the symbolic milestones of a Nullarbor road trip.

📷 Road Trip Tip: Stop for the classic SA/WA border photograph before continuing your journey. It’s one of the traditional photo opportunities of crossing the Nullarbor.

What is Border Village Like?

Border Village is not a conventional country town with suburban streets and a shopping centre. Instead, it is a small highway settlement centred around Border Village Roadhouse, which provides most of the services travellers need. The roadhouse describes itself as a place to restock, refresh and recover before continuing across the Nullarbor. After hours of driving through sparsely populated country, having access to food, fuel, showers, a pool, laundry and Wi-Fi can feel surprisingly luxurious.

Border Village is a particularly convenient overnight stop for caravanners and motorhome travellers. The caravan park offers both powered and unpowered sites, with plenty of space for touring rigs. Current live booking information lists unpowered caravan sites at around $15 and powered caravan sites at around $25, although prices can change and should be checked when booking. The Western Australian Quarantine Checkpoint

One of the most important things westbound travellers need to know is that the Western Australian quarantine checkpoint operates right at the border. The WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirms that the SA/WA road checkpoint operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year. Western Australia has strict biosecurity controls designed to stop agricultural pests and diseases entering the state. Before arriving at Border Village, check your caravan fridge, vehicle, food boxes and storage compartments for restricted products.

⚠️ WA Quarantine: Do not try to conceal restricted food. Declare anything you’re unsure about and follow the instructions of quarantine officers at the checkpoint.

Eucla

One of the best reasons to spend a little time around Border Village is the proximity of Eucla. Eucla lies only around 12 km west of Border Village and is one of the most historically interesting settlements on the entire Nullarbor crossing. The best-known attraction is the Old Eucla Telegraph Station, the remains of which are gradually being engulfed by shifting sand dunes. Border Village Roadhouse itself promotes the Eucla Telegraph Station as one of the attractions travellers can visit nearby.

The Great Australian Bight

Border Village lies only a few kilometres inland from the spectacular coastline of the Great Australian Bight. The cliffs and coastal landscapes around this part of the Nullarbor are among the most dramatic on the entire road trip. Travellers should use recognised roads and lookout areas rather than following informal tracks toward cliff edges. The limestone cliffs can be unstable and exposed to extreme weather and strong winds.

Nullarbor Links – Border Kangaroo

Golfers crossing the Nullarbor can also play a hole at Border Village. The roadhouse is home to the Border Kangaroo hole on the famous Nullarbor Links golf course. Nullarbor Links stretches across the continent with individual golf holes located at towns and roadhouses along the route, providing a uniquely Australian way to break up the long journey.

Rooey II – The Giant Kangaroo

Border Village also has one of the Nullarbor’s classic roadside photo opportunities – the giant kangaroo known as Rooey II. South Australia’s tourism listing prominently features Rooey II among the attractions at Border Village. Together with the SA/WA border signs, it makes Border Village one of the more entertaining photo stops along the Eyre Highway.

Fuel and Supplies

Fuel is available at Border Village Roadhouse, along with food, drinks and traveller supplies. The roadhouse explicitly promotes itself as a place to refuel before the next stage of the journey. Given the enormous distances involved in Nullarbor travel, take advantage of reliable fuel stops rather than allowing your tank to run unnecessarily low.

Keep a comfortable fuel reserve.
Headwinds, towing and unexpected road closures can all change your planned fuel range.

Free Wi-Fi and Mobile Reception

Reliable communication is never guaranteed across the Nullarbor. Border Village Roadhouse provides free Wi-Fi, while South Australia’s environment department identifies the areas around Border Village and Nullarbor roadhouses as among the limited locations where reliable phone coverage may be available. Use the opportunity to download offline maps, check weather and road conditions and confirm your next accommodation stop.

Swimming Pool

A swimming pool is one of the more unexpected facilities at Border Village. The pool is available to accommodation and caravan-park guests and can be particularly welcome after a hot day on the Eyre Highway. It’s a good example of why Border Village is worth considering for an overnight stay rather than simply a five-minute fuel stop.

Are Dogs Allowed?

South Australia’s official tourism listing currently describes Border Village Roadhouse as pet friendly by enquiry. If you’re travelling with a dog, mention your pet when booking so staff can confirm the appropriate site or accommodation type. Keep dogs under effective control and remember that different rules may apply if you travel into nearby protected areas.

Wildlife and Road Safety

Wildlife is another reason to avoid unnecessary night driving across the Nullarbor. South Australia’s environment department recommends early morning and evening for wildlife viewing, when travellers may encounter wombats, dingoes and numerous bird species. Unfortunately, those are also periods when animals are more likely to be close to the road. Plan your driving day sensibly, take regular breaks and use places such as Border Village to stop before fatigue becomes a problem.

Road Closures and Remote Travel

The Eyre Highway is the only sealed road linking South Australia and Western Australia across the Nullarbor, so closures can have a major impact on travellers. In January 2026, for example, a bushfire closed a long section of the highway and left travellers temporarily stranded at Nullarbor roadhouses including Border Village. Check current road and fire conditions before travelling, particularly during hot, dry or stormy weather.

What Should You Carry?

Even with good facilities at Border Village, this remains remote travel. Carry:

  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Food and snacks
  • Adequate fuel
  • First-aid kit
  • Sun protection
  • Warm clothing
  • Vehicle tools
  • Serviceable spare tyre
  • Tyre repair equipment
  • Offline maps
  • Phone charging equipment
  • Emergency communication equipment where practical

Best Time to Visit Border Village

Winter is generally the most comfortable time to explore the Nullarbor. South Australia’s environment department specifically recommends the cooler winter months because daytime conditions are more comfortable for sightseeing and long-distance travel. Winter also coincides with the southern right whale season along the Great Australian Bight. Summer can be extremely hot and exposed, so carry plenty of drinking water and check fire conditions before travelling.

Is Border Village Worth Stopping At?

Definitely.

Border Village is a practical fuel and accommodation stop, but its position makes it much more memorable than an ordinary roadhouse. You’re standing right on the boundary between two enormous Australian states, with Eucla and its historic telegraph station only a short drive away and the Great Australian Bight just to the south. Add the giant kangaroo, Nullarbor Links golf hole, swimming pool, restaurant and the ritual of passing through the WA quarantine checkpoint and Border Village becomes a genuine part of the Nullarbor experience.

Rather than simply refuelling and continuing, consider spending the night, exploring Eucla and enjoying the sense of achievement that comes with reaching the SA/WA border.
