Camping, Fuel and Accommodation Right on the South Australia–Western Australia Border
For travellers crossing the Nullarbor, Border Village Roadhouse is one of those stops that feels like a genuine milestone. Located on the Eyre Highway right beside the South Australia–Western Australia border, Border Village provides fuel, meals, accommodation and caravan facilities in one of the most remote parts of Australia. For westbound travellers, it marks the end of the South Australian section of the Nullarbor crossing. For those heading east, it’s one of the first major service stops after entering South Australia. With powered and unpowered camping, motel accommodation, restaurant meals, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and even a swimming pool, Border Village offers considerably more comfort than the basic roadside rest areas scattered along the Eyre Highway.
Border Village provides both powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites, making it a practical overnight stop for almost every type of touring setup.
The caravan park is suitable for travellers with:
The roadhouse describes the camping area as having plenty of room to spread out, with the added advantage of proper traveller facilities close by. After several days of remote travel, having access to a hot shower, laundry, Wi-Fi, a cooked meal and a swimming pool can make Border Village feel surprisingly luxurious.
One of the main advantages of staying here is the range of facilities available in such a remote location.
Facilities include:
One facility you don’t necessarily expect to find while crossing the Nullarbor is a swimming pool. Border Village provides a pool for guests, which can be particularly welcome after a long day driving across the exposed Nullarbor landscape. During the warmer months, it can be a great way to cool down before dinner and another long day on the road.
You don’t need to be travelling with a caravan to stay at Border Village. Accommodation options include executive rooms, motel rooms, family rooms and cabins. The motel rooms are air-conditioned and include an ensuite bathroom, refrigerator, television, tea and coffee-making facilities and free Wi-Fi. For travellers who have spent several nights camping, upgrading to a motel room for a night can provide a welcome break.
Rates vary depending on whether you’re camping, using a powered site or booking one of the accommodation rooms. South Australia’s official tourism listing currently advertises Border Village accommodation from approximately $15 to $210, depending on accommodation type. Because prices and availability can change, check the current tariff when making your booking rather than relying on an older published rate.
Border Village accepts bookings for accommodation and travellers can also arrange their stay directly with the roadhouse. During quieter periods you may be able to arrive without a reservation, but booking ahead is recommended if you require a particular room or powered caravan site. This is particularly worthwhile during the popular winter and spring Nullarbor travelling season.
After hundreds of kilometres of driving, having someone else cook dinner is one of the pleasures of staying at a Nullarbor roadhouse. Border Village has an on-site restaurant serving meals to travellers and accommodation guests. There’s also a bar, making it easy to relax after parking the caravan for the night.
Border Village is an important fuel stop on the Eyre Highway. Distances between services are substantial, and strong winds can considerably increase fuel consumption when towing a caravan. For that reason, it’s generally wise to take advantage of reliable fuel stops rather than running your tank unnecessarily low.
For westbound travellers, Border Village marks the point where South Australia gives way to Western Australia. The WA border checkpoint is located immediately alongside the settlement. Western Australia operates strict biosecurity controls designed to prevent agricultural pests and diseases from entering the state. Before reaching the checkpoint, check the current rules covering fruit, vegetables, honey, plants, seeds and other restricted products.
Crossing the SA/WA border is one of the traditional photo stops on a Nullarbor road trip. After hundreds of kilometres of open highway, stopping for a photograph at the border is a simple way to mark your progress across the continent. Border Village also has its famous giant kangaroo – Rooey II – providing another classic Nullarbor photo opportunity.
Border Village is also part of the famous Nullarbor Links, promoted as the world’s longest golf course. The course stretches across the Nullarbor with individual holes located at towns and roadhouses between Ceduna and Kalgoorlie. Border Village is home to the appropriately named Border Kangaroo hole.
Just across the Western Australian border is Eucla, one of the most historically interesting settlements on the Nullarbor. The remains of the Old Eucla Telegraph Station are gradually being swallowed by shifting sand dunes and provide a fascinating reminder of the days when the telegraph line connected Western Australia with the rest of the country. The combination of Border Village and Eucla makes this one of the more interesting sections of the Nullarbor crossing to explore rather than simply drive through.
South Australia’s official tourism listing currently describes Border Village Roadhouse as pet friendly by enquiry. If you’re travelling with a dog, confirm the current caravan park rules when booking, particularly if you are also considering motel or cabin accommodation. Keep pets under effective control and clean up after them around the caravan park.
Mobile coverage across the Nullarbor can be unreliable, so the availability of free Wi-Fi at Border Village is particularly useful. It provides an opportunity to contact family, check weather and road conditions, update maps and plan the next stage of your journey. It’s still sensible to download important information before leaving the roadhouse rather than assuming you’ll have reception further along the highway.
Even with good facilities at Border Village, the Nullarbor remains remote travel so please read our Nullarbor Plain Checklist
The cooler months are generally the most popular time to cross the Nullarbor. Daytime temperatures are typically more comfortable than during summer, although nights can become surprisingly cold. Winter also coincides with southern right whale season along the Great Australian Bight, making it an excellent time to combine the crossing with visits to the Head of Bight and Bunda Cliffs. Summer travellers should be prepared for heat and very exposed conditions.
Border Village Roadhouse is more than simply another fuel stop on the Eyre Highway. Its position right on the South Australia–Western Australia border makes it one of the symbolic landmarks of the entire Nullarbor crossing. For caravanners, the combination of powered and unpowered sites, showers, laundry facilities, swimming pool, restaurant and free Wi-Fi makes it an especially convenient place to spend the night. You can refuel, have a proper meal, cool off in the pool, take the obligatory border photograph and prepare yourself for the next stage of the journey. And with historic Eucla just across the border, there’s enough nearby to justify slowing down rather than treating Border Village as somewhere to simply drive through.
