Madura Nullarbor Plain

Madura, Western Australia – Nullarbor Travel Guide

Madura Pass, Panoramic Views, Historic Horse Country and Classic Nullarbor Hospitality

Set beneath the dramatic Hampton Tablelands on the Western Australian side of the Nullarbor, Madura is one of the most scenic roadhouse settlements on the Eyre Highway. Located around 529 km east of Norseman, Madura sits at the foot of Madura Pass, where the highway drops from the higher tablelands onto the broad Roe Plains below. For travellers crossing the Nullarbor, Madura provides fuel, food, motel accommodation, caravan camping and a welcome place to rest after another long stretch of highway. But the settlement is also worth stopping at for its history and scenery. Madura was originally established during the nineteenth century as a pastoral settlement associated with the breeding of horses for military use, while the nearby Madura Pass Lookout provides some of the best elevated views anywhere along this section of the Nullarbor. Rather than simply stopping for fuel, allow a little extra time to enjoy the lookout, take in the enormous scale of the Roe Plains and appreciate one of the most distinctive landscapes on the journey between Norseman and the South Australian border.

Where is Madura?

Madura is located on the Eyre Highway in Western Australia, between Cocklebiddy to the west and Mundrabilla to the east. The Shire of Dundas places Madura approximately 529 km from Norseman. The settlement occupies a striking position at the base of the Hampton Tablelands, where the highway descends through Madura Pass onto the Roe Plains. This elevated terrain gives Madura a different character from many other Nullarbor roadhouse stops, particularly when viewed from the lookout above the pass.

🚗 Road Trip Tip: Stop at the Madura Pass Lookout before or after visiting the roadhouse. It provides one of the best opportunities to appreciate the scale of the Roe Plains from above.

What is Madura Like?

Madura is not a conventional town with suburban streets and a large commercial centre. Instead, the modern settlement is centred around Madura Roadhouse, which provides the essential services required by travellers crossing this isolated part of Australia. The setting is particularly attractive by Nullarbor standards, with the Hampton escarpment rising behind the settlement and the vast Roe Plains stretching away below. It’s a good place to stop for lunch, refuel or spend the night before continuing toward Cocklebiddy or Mundrabilla.

A Brief History of Madura

Madura was originally settled during the 1870s as a pastoral homestead. One of the more unusual aspects of its early history is its association with horse breeding. The area became known for breeding quality horses for military use, including horses destined for the British Imperial Indian Army. These Australian-bred horses were part of a broader tradition of exporting so-called “Walers” for cavalry and military service overseas. Madura therefore has a rather different early story from the telegraph settlements and highway service centres found elsewhere across the Nullarbor.

Madura Pass

The most distinctive geographical feature around the settlement is Madura Pass. Here, the Eyre Highway crosses the Hampton escarpment and drops down onto the vast Roe Plains. The change in elevation provides one of the most visually interesting sections of the Nullarbor journey. Travellers who have spent hours crossing relatively flat terrain suddenly gain a much broader perspective over the landscape ahead.

Madura Pass Lookout

The Madura Pass Lookout is the attraction you should not miss. Located near the Eyre Highway, the lookout provides expansive views over the Roe Plains, the highway below and the landscape stretching toward the south. The Shire of Dundas specifically highlights Madura for its panoramic views and identifies the lookout as a popular photographic stop. On a clear day, the sheer size of the landscape is extraordinary.

📷 Photography Tip: Madura Pass Lookout is particularly impressive in softer morning or late-afternoon light, when shadows help define the escarpment and plains below.

The Roe Plains

Below Madura Pass lie the enormous Roe Plains. These relatively flat plains run between the Hampton Tablelands and the Great Australian Bight coastline and form one of the major landscape features of the eastern Western Australian Nullarbor. From the Madura Pass Lookout, travellers can see how dramatically the higher escarpment gives way to the plains below. It’s one of the best places on the Eyre Highway to appreciate the geological scale of the region rather than simply experiencing it from road level.

Madura Roadhouse

Modern Madura revolves around Madura Roadhouse.

  • Convenience store
  • Meals
  • Takeaway food
  • Licensed bar and tavern
  • Motel accommodation
  • Family rooms
  • Pet-friendly accommodation
  • Caravan park

The current operator describes Madura as a convenient stop between Norseman and Ceduna for travellers needing fuel, accommodation and a proper meal.

Camping at Madura

Madura Roadhouse includes a caravan park and camping area suitable for travellers wanting to stop overnight. Caravanners, motorhome travellers and campers have access to the roadhouse facilities, while motel accommodation provides an alternative for anyone who would prefer a proper room. The site’s location beneath the escarpment gives Madura a scenic setting compared with some of the flatter Nullarbor stops. Current prices are best confirmed directly with the roadhouse rather than relying on old published rates.

Motel Accommodation

Madura Roadhouse currently offers clean, air-conditioned motel accommodation for travellers who want a comfortable break from camping.

Current accommodation options include:

  • Standard motel rooms
  • Family rooms
  • Pet-friendly rooms

For travellers who have already spent several nights in a caravan or tent, a motel room can provide a welcome change.

Restaurant and Tavern

One of the advantages of staying at Madura is having food and drinks available right beside your accommodation. The roadhouse restaurant serves hearty meals for travellers, while takeaway options are also available. There is also a licensed tavern and bar where visitors can relax after finishing their day’s driving. After hours on the Eyre Highway, having someone else prepare dinner is often one of the simple pleasures of staying at a Nullarbor roadhouse.

Fuel at Madura

Madura Roadhouse provides fuel for travellers using the Eyre Highway. Because distances between service points remain substantial, Madura is a useful place to top up even if your tank isn’t close to empty. Strong headwinds, towing and unexpected detours can all increase fuel consumption across the Nullarbor.

⛽ Nullarbor Fuel Tip
Keep a comfortable reserve rather than planning fuel stops down to the last few litres.

EV Charging

Madura Roadhouse currently lists an EV charging point among its facilities. Electric vehicle travel across the Nullarbor requires careful planning, so always confirm current charger availability before relying on individual roadhouses. Build some flexibility into your charging itinerary rather than assuming every charger will always be available when you arrive.

Mullamullang Cave

The country north-west of Madura contains another reminder of the enormous underground world beneath the Nullarbor – Mullamullang Cave. The Shire of Dundas describes the cave system as containing numerous side passages, three major lakes and extensive rockfall areas. Like many Nullarbor caves, this is not somewhere casual visitors should simply enter without research or permission. Caves across the region can be technically difficult, environmentally sensitive and potentially dangerous.

⚠️ Cave Safety: Do not assume that a cave shown on a map is open for general public exploration. Check current access rules and never enter remote caves without appropriate experience, permission and equipment.

Small Blowholes Near Madura

The limestone beneath the Nullarbor also produces numerous small blowholes and openings where air moves through underground cavities. Some traveller information identifies small blowholes in the wider Madura area. They are considerably less dramatic than the better-known Caiguna Blowhole, but they provide another interesting reminder that the seemingly solid Nullarbor Plain is riddled with underground voids. Exercise care around any natural opening in limestone country.

Wildlife Around Madura

The apparently empty landscape around Madura supports plenty of wildlife.

Travellers may encounter:

  • Kangaroos
  • Emus
  • Wedge-tailed eagles
  • Reptiles
  • Numerous arid-zone bird species

Wildlife is particularly active around dawn and dusk, which also makes these higher-risk periods for driving. Where practical, finish your day’s driving before dark and use places such as Madura for an overnight stop.

Driving West from Madura

Heading west from Madura, the next major roadhouse settlement is Cocklebiddy. Beyond Cocklebiddy, the highway continues toward Caiguna, Balladonia and eventually Norseman. This remains remote travel, with long distances between services. Continue to plan fuel, food, accommodation and rest stops in advance.

Driving East from Madura

Travelling east takes you toward Mundrabilla, Eucla and Border Village. Eucla is particularly worth allowing additional time for because of its historic Telegraph Station ruins, white sand dunes and views toward the Great Australian Bight. At Border Village, travellers cross between Western Australia and South Australia.

What Should You Carry?

Even with a well-equipped roadhouse at Madura, you’re travelling through an extremely remote part of Australia. Carry:

  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Food and snacks
  • Adequate fuel
  • First-aid supplies
  • Sun protection
  • Warm clothing
  • Vehicle tools
  • Serviceable spare tyre
  • Tyre repair equipment
  • Offline maps
  • Phone charging equipment
  • Emergency communications equipment where practical

Best Time to Visit Madura

The cooler months are generally the most comfortable time to visit Madura and travel across the Nullarbor. Autumn, winter and spring provide more pleasant conditions for long-distance driving and sightseeing. Winter nights can become cold, particularly in exposed areas, so pack warm clothing even if daytime temperatures are mild. Summer can bring extreme heat, making adequate drinking water and a well-maintained vehicle especially important.
