Balladonia, Western Australia – Nullarbor Travel Guide

The 90 Mile Straight, Skylab History and a Classic Eyre Highway Roadhouse Stop

Located on the Eyre Highway east of Norseman, Balladonia is one of the most important and memorable roadhouse settlements on the western side of the Nullarbor. For eastbound travellers, Balladonia is the first major fuel and accommodation stop after leaving Norseman. For westbound travellers, it marks the end of the legendary 90 Mile Straight — the extraordinary 146.6-kilometre section of straight highway between Balladonia and Caiguna. Balladonia is more than just somewhere to refuel. The roadhouse complex includes motel accommodation, caravan camping, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, service station, shop and a surprisingly interesting heritage museum. The town is also famous for its connection with NASA’s Skylab space station, fragments of which fell across the region in 1979 and are now part of the local museum display.

Where is Balladonia?

Balladonia is located on the Eyre Highway in south-eastern Western Australia. The Shire of Dundas lists it approximately 197 km east of Norseman, while Balladonia Hotel Motel describes itself as around 190 km east of Norseman. Like many Nullarbor settlements, there is no conventional town centre. Balladonia revolves around the hotel-motel, caravan park, BP service station, restaurant and traveller facilities. Its location makes it a natural stopping point before or after tackling the famous 90 Mile Straight.

The 90 Mile Straight

Balladonia is best known as the western gateway to the 90 Mile Straight.

Australia’s Famous Straight Road
146.6 KM
between Balladonia and Caiguna

Despite its familiar name, the straight is approximately 146.6 kilometres long — a little over 91 miles. For first-time Nullarbor travellers, the roadside sign marking the beginning or end of the straight is one of the classic photo stops of the trip. The drive may look easy, but long, straight roads can become monotonous. Take proper rest breaks and don’t underestimate driver fatigue.

🚗 Driving Tip: The 90 Mile Straight is a novelty, but it is still remote highway driving. Stop before you become tired rather than trying to complete a long stretch simply because the road looks easy.

Balladonia Hotel Motel

The Balladonia Hotel Motel forms the heart of the settlement and provides most of the services travellers need.

Current facilities include:

  • Motel rooms and suites
  • Caravan and camping accommodation
  • Restaurant
  • Licensed bar
  • Swimming pool
  • Children’s playground
  • Shop and cafeteria
  • Service station
  • Museum

Camping at Balladonia

Balladonia operates one of the better-developed roadhouse caravan parks on the Eyre Highway. The caravan sites are set among trees and bushland, giving the park a more natural feel than many exposed Nullarbor overnight stops. Current facilities include clean bathrooms and showers, swimming pool, children’s playground, shop, cafeteria and restaurant. The current online booking system lists caravan sites from $50 per night, with the rate accommodating up to five guests depending on booking conditions.

Are Dogs Allowed?

Yes – pets are welcome in the caravan park. The motel itself has a stricter policy: pets are not permitted in motel rooms unless they are certified service animals. If travelling with a dog, the caravan park is therefore the appropriate accommodation option.

Water at Balladonia

💧 Important Water Information: Balladonia Hotel Motel currently advises that it cannot provide excess water to fill caravan or motorhome tanks. Water supplies are limited and expensive to transport into this remote location.

The property maintains sufficient water for accommodation guests and normal operations, but travellers should arrive with their own caravan or motorhome tanks adequately supplied. This is an important reminder that water is a precious resource throughout the Nullarbor.

Wi-Fi and Mobile Connectivity

Balladonia’s official caravan park information states that Wi-Fi is not available in the caravan park. Mobile reception across the wider Nullarbor is also inconsistent. Download maps and important travel information before entering long remote stretches of the Eyre Highway.

Balladonia Heritage Museum

One of the surprises at Balladonia is the Balladonia Heritage Museum, located within the roadhouse complex.

Displays cover topics including:

  • Ngadju and Mirning cultural history
  • Early Balladonia Station history
  • Afghan cameleers
  • Local flora and fauna
  • Historic motoring events
  • Skylab

The museum is one of the more interesting roadside heritage stops on the western side of the Nullarbor.

Skylab and Balladonia

Balladonia became internationally famous in 1979 when debris from NASA’s Skylab space station fell across south-eastern Western Australia. Pieces of the spacecraft were recovered from the wider region, and Balladonia’s museum now displays a major piece connected with the Skylab event. The incident attracted worldwide media attention and permanently linked tiny Balladonia with one of the strangest episodes in Australian space history. It is easily one of the most unusual stories attached to any Nullarbor roadhouse.

🚀 Don’t Miss: Even if you’re only stopping for fuel, take a few minutes to visit the Balladonia museum and see the Skylab display.

Restaurant and Bar

Balladonia has an à la carte restaurant that currently opens every evening from 5:00pm. The adjoining licensed bar provides somewhere to relax after a long day on the road, with pool and darts available. For caravan travellers, being able to leave the camp kitchen packed away and have dinner at the restaurant can be a very welcome break.

Swimming Pool and Playground

Guests can use the outdoor entertaining area and below-ground swimming pool. There is also a children’s playground, making Balladonia a useful overnight stop for families travelling the Nullarbor. A few shady trees around the grounds provide somewhere to relax outside during suitable weather.

BP Balladonia Service Station

BP Balladonia provides fuel and essential traveller supplies. The service station is currently advertised as operating from 6:00am to 9:00pm every day of the year.

Fuel currently available includes:

  • BP Ultimate 98
  • Unleaded 91
  • Diesel

The shop also carries drinks, snacks, bread, maps, souvenirs, personal items and basic motor accessories.

Nullarbor Links

Balladonia is one of the participating locations on the famous Nullarbor Links golf course. The course stretches approximately 1,365 kilometres between Ceduna and Kalgoorlie, with individual holes located at towns and roadhouses along the route. Playing a hole at Balladonia is another entertaining way to break up a long day on the Eyre Highway.

Wildlife and Bushland

Balladonia Caravan Park is surrounded by bushland and is known for birdlife, kangaroos and other wildlife visiting the area. The region also sits near the edge of the vast Great Western Woodlands, giving the landscape a noticeably more wooded character than the treeless image many travellers associate with the Nullarbor. Take extra care when driving around dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.

What Should You Bring?

Even with good services at Balladonia, this remains remote travel. Carry:

  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Food and snacks
  • Adequate fuel reserve
  • First-aid supplies
  • Sun protection
  • Warm clothing
  • Vehicle tools
  • Serviceable spare tyre
  • Tyre repair equipment
  • Offline maps
  • Phone charging equipment
  • Emergency communications equipment where practical

Best Time to Visit Balladonia

Balladonia can be visited year-round, but the cooler months are generally more comfortable for long-distance driving. Autumn, winter and spring usually provide pleasant daytime conditions, although winter nights can become cold. Summer can be hot, making the swimming pool particularly welcome. Carry plenty of water regardless of the season, especially because large caravan and motorhome tanks cannot currently be filled from the property’s limited supply.

Is Balladonia Worth Stopping At?

Definitely.

Balladonia provides all the practical things Nullarbor travellers need — fuel, food, accommodation, caravan camping and somewhere to rest. But it also offers several things you might not expect from a remote highway roadhouse. The Heritage Museum and Skylab display are genuinely interesting, while the swimming pool, restaurant and bar make an overnight stop considerably more comfortable. Then there is the 90 Mile Straight, which gives Balladonia a special place in Australian road-trip folklore.

If your itinerary allows, stop for more than fuel. Visit the museum, photograph the 90 Mile Straight sign, have a meal and enjoy one of the most distinctive roadhouse settlements on the western Nullarbor.
